When the Open Firmware framebuffer (offb) is used, the splash screen does not appear on my computer--instead there is only a white screen. In graphical runlevels Xorg eventually launches and displays fine, but the virtual consoles are blank and unworking. Using rivafb works perfectly, displaying the splash and VTs. Unfortunately I cannot convince the kernel to use it, without recompiling the kernel. The kernel parameters video=riva or video=rivafb should work, perhaps the module needs to be in the initrd for that? My computer is an Apple G4 Quicksilver, specs here: http://apple- history.com/?model=g4_quicksilver .
