Hi Scott,
upstart seems to work almost fine on ia64 (no spinning) but i can't get
serial console. The machine i have has also a gfx so it probably spawns
the normal tty (no monitor to check) but with append="console..."
upstart should also create ttySX.

PS the machine boots fine. i can ssh to it at the end of the boot
process.
