Phillip,
That works. In my Natty on sda18 I added your PPA and here's the list of
updates:
Commit Log for Thu May 5 02:39:39 2011
Upgraded the following packages:
gnome-power-manager (2.32.0-2ubuntu2) to 2.32.0-2ubuntu3
libparted0debian1 (2.3-5ubuntu5) to 2.3-5ubuntu6~ppa0
parted (2.3-5ubuntu5)
I believe I found the issue. It also was affecting ALL partitions ( not
just = 16 ) on dmraid devices. I have uploaded a patched version to my
PPA so if someone else can test and give feedback it would be helpful.

Can any of you (Erick?) check if the same issue exists in parted, and if
so confirm the bug for parted too?

Still the same, except I made that OS a keeper and added my data
partitions to fstab (with a symlink), screenshot attached.

Looking at that I saw that I had another Natty on sda17 so I booted it
and it's the same way. A quick look in /var/log tells me it was an
upgrade test on 4/13.
Even though I'm running the OS on sda17 it shows it's unmounted in
Gparted. (Only extended and swap show being mounted)
I have another
Even sda16 is borked.
I hope the screenshot I'm attaching is correct, my gnome3 is pretty well
borked itself ;^)

Once you hit partition 16, the dev node major number changes since the
standard major/minor allocation policy runs out of partition minor
numbers. That is probably the cause of this problem.
Oddly, when I try to reproduce this under qemu with either 10.10 or
11.04, I get all kinds of FUBAR.
Well my sda15 is Linux Mint Debian Edition, which I hadn't tried to boot
in a long time, and it seems to have an X problem.
So I moved on to sda14, which is also a Natty, and it's OK.
Perhaps off-topic but I'm poor so I'm a bit new to SATA drives, but I
seldom had problems with large numbers of
In the past, linux allocated 16 device numbers for the SCSI driver which
has device names of the form /dev/sdX (versus the IDE driver with device
names of the form /dev/hdX). One device number was used for the device
itself (/dev/sda), and the remaining 15 device numbers were used for the
I'd just tossed a drive from a torched laptop in my box to hopefully
recover some data and that drive is well recognized by Gparted but I
noticed exactly what las is describing. I'm running Natty Beta1 on my
/dev/sda18 and Gparted is not indicating that it's mounted. I used df to
be sure I wasn't
I just happened to check and if I highlight sda18, then right click and
select Information, it says the partition is NOT mounted although it
certainly is!
