i remember vaguely that some of my problems were resolved by removing
ubuntu-desktop and installing it again...
It is a long shot, but maybe worth a try?

this is still happening to me even with the most recent updates. I tried
to install a .deb package manually, but it crashed after entering my
password.

I was trying to install one .deb package which required an additional
package to be downloaded.The pwd was entered and the down load was about
to be started.At that instant Debi package installer closed
unexpectedly.
