It appears that Bonjour is enabled in pidgin (gutsy).

According to http://gaim.sourceforge.net/summerofcode/2005.html the Gaim
project intends to switch the bonjour protocol to Avahi some day.
Probably they just need a volunteer.

so, the idea of splitting the bonjour plugin out to a seperate package

I do not know how to estimate the usefulness of some piece of
code/function. Bonjour is handy when people for some reason cannot be
connected to external jabber server (and local server is overkill).

I have not heard of anyone being interested in converting from the howl
compat library, it does everything we need of it. So I suspect that
this bug, or some equivalent in either this tracker or the gaim upstream
tracker, will remain open till someone submits a patch.

I definitely think it would be better if our Bonjour plugin used avahi
instead of howl. Mostly because avahi is a freedesktop.org project, and
I'm strongly in favor of supporting standards.
But we're a bit short help right now... so I don't imagine we'll be
switching any time soon. Patches
Ask to upstream, Ubuntu team does almost no upstream code at the moment
and doesn't plan to code an avahi version

not, howl compat is to universe because we decided we don't want to have

Since gaim-1:2.0.0+beta3.1-1ubuntu8 has a dependency on a universe

anymore when gaim depends on libmeanwhile-dev

No, Sergey, I'm already too much work, I'm not looking for new coding tasks
like rewritting a plugin.
The best way would be to have that plugin using avahi rather than howl if
somebody wants to work on that

I'm with Sergey on this, that is a feature we should have. Now, this is
not my expert area, but, doesn't gaim support dynamic protocol/plugins?
would it be possible/plausable to have the boujour/ichat/howl/mdns/avahi
protocol/support as a seperate package? like gaim-ichat or whatever? i'm
not a
each protocol is provided as a plugin, yes, so it is possible to package
them separately.

To do that would require that Gaim, a package in main, build-depend on a
package not in main. Ubuntu policy may not allow that.

alternately, but requiring far more work, it would require that there be
a second package, gaim-bonjour. It'd be a ton more work because the
original source would be the same as the gaim package, so there would
have to be patches stripping out everything else and modifying the build
incredibly
Scratch that. It's not a universe package on Edgy at least.

I'll confuse even more.. libavahi-compat-howl-dev binary is actually on
universe, but the actual source package (avahi) is on main. I guess
libavahi-compat-howl-dev needs a promotion to main before it happens, but devs
have the final work of couse.

Sebastian, are you ready to rewrite gaim bonjour support? I think
loosing this feature is not nice - especially taking the fact that the
price for it is one tiny library. Talking to iChat users would be nice
to have, I think..

It seems it is just necessary to add libavahi-compat-howl-dev into the
build dependency, then gaim would pick it up and enable bonjour
automatically.
