So reinstalling from scratch is fixed with a configuration change?

I can confirm this situation when i'm not in root session.
truecrypt, boinc, audacity, filezilla come with no menu. When i launch them
with the sudo command, no problem, menu reappears !
I've a lot of softs and i'm not ready to reinstall ubuntu now.
