Well that's interesting. According to:

the bug was fixed upstream on Date: Mon, 09 May 2011. So apparently someone is
maintaining it.
The simple fix was the information that I provided in my comment #9.
Just how difficult is it
As this package has been unmaintained for a long time, I removed it from
oneiric instead. pavucontrol is the replacement.

Its worth noting that padevchooser is deprecated upstream and no longer
being maintained. I dare say it should even be removed from
Debian/Ubuntu. I suggest people use pavucontrol instead.

I'm trying to write some simple documentation for how to record Stereo
Mix in Ubuntu, but the absence of this icon complicates the issue.

Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. However, a paper cut should
be a small usability issue, in the default Ubuntu install, that affects many
people and is quick and easy to fix. So this bug can't be addressed as part of
this project.

Yup, that the bug is still there, i.e. the icon is still not there.
Switched back temporarily to 10.10 due to system corruption issues, so can't
tell whether the fix has been applied to Ubuntu as well or not.

Linux, but for new users it's not a good advert when yet another month
goes by and the icons are still missing.

Those icons are missing in maverick.
