Title:
mutter restarts on closing almost any application (xterm not included)

Adding to what Martin Zackrisson said, every time I close Firefox with
no other window open mutter seems to go blank. If I have another window
open this problem doesn't happen. If the other windows minimized first,
the problem occurs. I can get mutter/unity back by pressing ctrl+alt+T
and
I'd say that it seems especially tied to when mutter has no window to
pass on focus to. And even more prominent if the last window to close is
in full screen mode.

The problem still persists only for firefox as far as i can see in
maverik latest upgrades. Other softwares like chromium or gnome-terminal
has not this issue. After the restart while opening firefox i get the
default ugly gtk theme and i won't get the ubuntu one until reboot.

I have it for firefox as well as some Java programmes like Jin. It does not
happen every time, but is frequent enough.

This appears to still be a work in progress - but it is in progress, so
hopefully we see a fix soon. As for the auto-hide, that was mentioned a month
or more ago during testing, and it's been wish-listed for the next version
(11.04).
The Mutter crashes were a lot more frequent before, so this

mutter restarts on closing almost any application (xterm not included)
This bug is still present as of version 0.2.46-0ubuntu4
Closing gtk applications does not seem to cause the crash, only
applications without support for global menu (firefox and thunderbird,
in my case).
How to reproduce:
1. Open firefox
2. Close Firefox
3. If mutter does not crash, go to 1
Here's the xsession-errors file. I've truncated the file for clearness:
the log begins right before opening firefox and finishes after mutter
restarts.

I can confirm that I still see regular crashes of mutter when closing
firefox and thunderbird. It's not every time, but pretty close to every
other time. This may be a different bug altogether, but I had no luck
getting information - most of the time apport does not launch after the
mutter

Hum, you first backtrace (in comment #5) looks interesting. We definitely need
something like that to catch and fix this bug.
Can you please try to install glib debug symbols and wait to reproduce it? (I
tried hard here to get it crash lik you got, it didn't)
PS: yeah, we have an issue with
gtk dbgsym can be interesting too btw.
also, if you have time, it would be nice after getting the stacktrace to try to
revert glib to an older version like 2.21.5
Thanks again :)

It would be great if somebody can tell me what packages are glib related
where I should try dbgsym.

sure, I think you want:
libglib2.0-0-dbg and libgtk2.0-0-dbgsym
do not hesitate if you need any help.

great, it seems you can (unfortunately in your case) reproduce it easy,
can you try to downgrade gtk in any case like I told in comment #9?
I should you should find it from gtk launchpad page, like

I can reproduce the crasher too with GV under Mutter + Unity.
I can't reproduce the same crasher when running Mutter in a desktop session.
So there is something specific to Unity.
Looking at the backtrace, it sounds like an Xerror that is not properly
trapped by Mutter, in the particular
I can reproduce this using the appmenus File-Quit every time. It seems
to happen because the window is sent a close event outside of Mutter
knowing about it and that leaves mutter in a bad state. It ends up
getting a bad window error and then calls abort () because of that
(which might be a bit
After an update today, the situation is different. There are no more
restarts of mutter, but the entire display becomes blank except for
mouse pointer. See bug report #638662 for details. Also unity crashes

arbitrary mouse

Sorry for the late reply. I am running in UNE session most of the time. Once
in a while I log into to gnome session for 5 min or so. One problem I
noticed is that once I log on to gnome session, the old style menu bar comes
along the unity bar. I have to remove the conf files to get it disappear.
This one is the gdb trace after installing dbgsym for unity packages. No dbgsym
for mutter yet.
I opened gv and closed it to produce the crash.

Also to add that if a program is started from terminal, its closure
