Thank you for your bug report. As generic compiz as now been uploaded to
Feisty (compiz-quinn is now known as beryl), we need to see if your bug
is still present. If you can test the version of compiz in feisty
(1:0.3.3-0ubuntu2~git2006112 or later) and tell us if you bug still
exists, please do.
I'm pretty sure that this is actually not a bug, but a feature in
which XGL restarts when I hit shift-backspace accidentally, as detailed
here (among lots of other places):
http://peter.hybridweb.co.uk/blog/2006/07/05/xgl-shift-backspace/
So, I'm officially an idiot, but at least my damn XGL

Which repo are you using to instlal compiz? Also are you using XGL, or
AIGLX? And is this dapper or edgy? Afaik compiz is looked at as 3rd
party software and is unsupported by the Ubuntu community (until we have
a stable package in our official repo). But I will still try to assist
you.

This is XGL on Edgy with an nvidia card (though an error with the same
outward appearance occurred on the same hardware on Dapper). I'll check
where the compiz package came from and post that shortly.
