I am running an Acer Aspire 5050-5827 with the Realtek ALC883. I can confirm that an update to date installation of Edgy Eft does not produce any sound. I am going to attempt to use OSS but would prefer that Alsa work instead. -- No sound on Acer laptops w/ Realtek ALC883 chipset

I'm running edgy on an Acer Aspire 5102WLMi. All the alsa bits seem to have been installed during setup, but gnome-sound-properties had everything set to OSS. Switching to alsa resulted in no sound. To get esd working, I had to replace libesd-alsa0 with libesd0 os that it would work with oss. **
