I am using dapper, as stock an installation as I can manage. I'll
upgrade to edgy when it's released, though.
I'll attach a particular photo that doesn't get detected; camera info
and whatnot should all be in the EXIF tags.

Thanks, EXIF rotation properties are preserved on import with f-spot
0.2.1.

The problem is not that they are imported with the wrong orientation,
the problem is that they are not imported at all...

You'll be glad to know that they should import properly now - there were
a number of bugs related to this which were fixed.
