I've found adding a line to xorg.conf to set a virtual desktop space to encompass a 1024x768 and 1440x900 monitor in an effort to cope with bug #635827 prevents the xserver from starting. If you comment out lines beginning with Virtual in the Display subsections, will X start for you? (though this
