Simplifying my /etc/X11/xorg.conf (on Lucid Lynx) made the symptoms disappear.
So I'm not sure whether it's a bug in the X server, gstreamer or no bug at all.
My "handwritten" xorg.conf is necessary because of #194760.
So I don't consider it useful to test this on Maverick.
