generic is my local version.
FWIW, I have given up on the description of how to build the kernel
that is on the web site and am using one sent to me by someone else.
It is kind of amazing that the documented version doesn't even work. I
miss FreeBSD...

Is generic your local version or arbitrary version signature?
I had the same issue so I wanted to see what a standard kernel's
modules.order looked like
