I have two ethernet ports at the back of the machine - port1 which is
eth0 and port2 which is eth1. By accident this morning I connected the
lan cable to the wrong port (port2 instead of port1) to continue this
severe ubuntu installation failure and everything works.
This is the dumbest mistake I
Just tried 'ifconfig eth1 up' no problems
Just tried 'ifconfig eth1 running' and got a Host name lookup failure. If
I do 'hostname' I get the correct hostname and if I do a 'hostname -i' I get
the correct ip address.

I just swapped eth0 for eth1 in /etc/network/interfaces and I have the
same result, so it's not to do with the broadcom controller, just the
standard install (?).
