I am experiencing this problem myself with a Toshiba Satellite
P105-S9722. It has an Nvidia Go 7900 GS. It worked GREAT in Dapper,
but fails with the symptoms described above in Edgy. Some of the above
posts have suggested modifying the Bus ID in the xorg.conf file.
Well... I don't have a Bus

i can confirm this bug with nvidia geforce 6800xt card. and i haven't
been able to fix it by changing BusID to PCI:1:0:0.

I had got the exact same problem.
I found that if you edit xorg.conf, go under device, and look for the
bus id, it is something like 0:4:0
where it should be 1:0:0

Thank you, that solved the issue.
Unfortunately, after that I had to manually edit the xorg.conf to get
my laptop's default resolution (1280x1000) and my german keyboard
layout back.
