Title:
Synaptics Touchpad not working in Ubuntu 10.10
To
@Earl - Glad to hear that a BIOS fix has resolved the problem. Follow up
questions:
1. How does the touchpad enable hotkey behave now?
2. Can the BIOS vendor provide any further details about what they changed to
fix it? (Any additional information might help us make the driver more
Thanks kamal for clearing the doubts

@Earl
I don't think that its a BIOS issue because I have seen many similar bugs in
ubuntu. There are other similar issue after suspend/resume but not related to
touchpads.. So the problem may be in ubuntu suspend resume.

The BIOS vendor was able to put in a fix for this issue. Ideally Ubuntu
wouldn't need a BIOS fix, but we can close this bug as it's not a
problem for this system anymore.

@Earl- Thanks for posting the additional logs. I note that the
coldboot log (comment #4) where the Synaptics touchpad doesn't get
recognized does show one different device being recognized: the webcam.
If its possible to disable the webcam in BIOS, it might be interesting
to try doing so (though
@Earl- Oh, the other question: Does the BIOS offer any switches
relating to the touchpad?

@ Kamal
It seems that bug is probably in linux rather than in
xserver-xorg-input-synaptics. In that case please update and correct the
package.

No, there aren't any bios settings that would make a difference. I can
disassemble it and remove the webcam to see if that makes a difference.

@Earl, it looks like the dmesg and other logs you've filed are from a
boot with the touchpad *working* (per the dmesg and udev logs) -- is
that correct?
Please also boot the machine cold (so that the touchpad doesn't work),
then promptly collect and post /var/log/dmesg and /var/log/udev here for

This is not a regression. Ubuntu 10.04 acts the same way.
