It sounds like you're still booting through GRUB Legacy. Since GRUB 2 clearly works on your system, have you considered running 'sudo upgrade- from-grub-legacy' to start using it directly? If your problem is that GRUB 2 isn't showing its menu and you want it to do so, then try putting a '#'
