I have the same issue, where in Dapper it was even in the menus. After
updating, or from a fresh install (I tried both) that menu item has been
remove and when trying to install the gnome applet in the panel, nothing
appears at all.

There is bug #17626 about the behaviour when no drive are listed. What
.directories do you delete (assuming that .directories mean
"directories" and is not the name of a directory)? Feel free to reopen
the bug if you still have the datas and want to debug it. Otherwise
let's keep the bug as closed
Just to satisfy my curiosity I logged-in as a different user. The
applet worked fine. So I deleted my .directories and logged back in and
it works fine now. I don't have the motivation to fix this now that
it's gone so I'm rejecting this bug.

CD drives were listed but only if a disk was inserted, also USB disks,
and IIRC floppy drives were listed if they were in the fstab. Basically
any removable disk. These are all displayed just fine in the Places
menu and in computer:///.
