Another problem I had using the nvidia driver are redraw errors
(repeated lines of junk below the cursor which disappeared by
minimizing-maximizing the window). But for this a solution is to add
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "disable"
EndSection
to xorg.conf as it is describe
Yes, that worked! But instead of editing xorg.conf, you can also run
nvidia-xconfig. It's all described in the Ubuntu guide, at
http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu_Edgy#How_to_install_Graphics_Driver_.28NVIDIA.29

I have a NVIDIA card on my notebook.
Using "nv", the display is very slow.
But when I change to the binary "nvidia" driver (package nvidia-glx)
the problem disappears.
1) apt-get install nvidia-glx
2) edit xorg.conf
Section "Device"
Identifier "NVIDIA Card"
Driver "nvidia"
my xorg.conf has a different driver:
Section "Device"
Identifier "NVIDIA Corporation NV37GL [Quadro FX 330]"
Driver "nv"
BusID "PCI:5:0:0"

I have the same problem, in particular [Alt]-[Tab] to suspend a
mathematica window to the background takes about 4 seconds, even if the
worksheet is completely empty.
The driver in the "device" section in my xorg.conf is "ati" (Radeon
7000/VE).
I have no trouble with any other kind of windows and

Where did you get Mathematica from? I can't find it in universe.
It may be that it needs updating due to 6.10 having different libraries
etc.
