Thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu.
Ubuntu 10.10 (maverick) reached end-of-life on April 10, 2012.
See this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases
Please upgrade to the latest version and re-test.
** Changed in: pulseaudio (Ubuntu)
Added this extra bit to the bug description. With apologies, should
have included it in the first place...
*** ALSO *** 'Internal Audio Analog Stereo' [built-in soundcard] is
always selected, even if the USB speakers had been the chosen device for
sound output before suspend.
** Description
Thanks for responding, Daniel.
Unfortunately, I am having difficulty getting pulseaudio out of the
equation- I edited /etc/pulse/client.conf to show 'no' instead of 'yes',
but it still seems to reappear on resume, and when I kill it, too!
Please could you give a prop in the right direction?

OK, disregard the above comment.
I managed to disable pulse, and suspend/resume.
On resume, the Alsamixer terminal reported that the sound device had
been unplugged (see screenshot), but on reselecting the device (F6), it
appeared to be unmuted. Music played, but only through internal
speakers-
Upon resume, what is the output from `cat /proc/asound/cards`?

HDA Intel at 0xd840 irq 53
1 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia

Is the following command audible?
speaker-test -c2 -l1 -twav -Dplughw:Speaker

Can you reproduce this without pulse involved? I.e., disable autospawn,
reboot, suspend, etc.
Note: you'll lose friendly functionality, but you can manipulate mixer
controls through `alsamixer` or `amixer` in a Terminal.
