Upstream have closed the report since this has been fixed in Gnome 3.0.
Ubuntu will not be shipping Gnome 3.0, so that leaves this bug
unresolved at our end. Are we going to implement this as an Ubuntu
patch, or shall we let it slide. Personally, I think making the display
of these two icons in

Maybe instead of removing them outright, the option could be added to
hide them, in the same way it's possible to show certain icons on your
desktop. That way, the default installation is a little less cluttered,
but then hiding the side pane and using these icons can also be
considered
Since this does not negatively impact the user experience, just clutter
up the navigation bar somewhat, this is not a paper cut.
