Binary package hint: nautilus

I have an NTFS USB drive.
I have a directory with about 19000 pictures.

An ls command on this directory works fine.
But when I open this directory in Nautilus, the systems becomes completely 
irresponsive.

Waiting several hours does not show any improvement.

I have to switch the cpu OFF to stop this
