In LibreOffice 3.3 on Ubuntu 10.10 the bug does NOT occur.
However, if the controls are to be more similar to MS PoeerPoint - and it
does seem that often the attempt is made to mimic the Microsoft product, the
command [F5] should start the presentation at the first slide (from the
beginning) and

The F5 key should give the same response in Impress as the menu item Slide
Show Slide Show but With a one slide presentation I get a black screen with
F5 and slide 1 with Slide Show Slide Show. I expected the first slide to
