The problem doesn't occur in my installation as well, right. The
original problem occured on a friend's notebook, where further
investigation turned out that he had vpnc once installed from source
tarball. His vpnc-script (I attached it for the records) might be a
leftover from that installation.
There doesn't seem to be a problem at all. Sorry for the troubles.

The script works for me and i have /bin/sh symlinked to /bin/dash. Can
you describe the problem?
