Your bug is probably unrelated to this one. Can you please open a new
bug report and attach /var/log/syslog and /var/log/partman from a
failing install attempt? Further instructions can be found at

Installer crashed
I experienced this problem as well, unrelated to a loose IDE cable.
During an Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron install, I manually edited partitions
so / was different than /home (the /home partition contained my
existing Ubuntu home directory), and when the installer got to Creating
User, (around 79%)
I got the same error at the exact same spot. Same install version.
I failed to create a working x64 7.04 on the drive earlier (it didn't boot).
I deleted the old partitions (one was a swap thing)(sorry Linux noob) before
installing 6.10.
The drive itself is a 20gig quantum fireball IDE
