When you write the above, do you mean you did this manually (using apt-
get or dpkg)? Or was that something that the

used synaptic to remove nvidia-glx, should I edit/add this to
launchpad?

after carrying out the above X refused to load on reboot. Followed 2
instructions given on ubuntu forum by tseliot and X will now boot :-
sudo aptitude install linux-generic nvidia-glx
sudo aptitude install linux-restricted-modules-'uname -r'
but compiz and beryl will not work
