please run the following in your terminal:
cat proc/bus/input/devices > ~/devices
dmesg > ~/dmesg
and attach the "devices" and "dmesg" files from your home directory to this
report.
you can also run: synclient -l to ch

Synaptics touchpad on a brand new install of k/ubuntu does not work, not
even from a live disk. Tested on both KDE and GNOME variants and came to
the conclusion that it probably is a xserver-xorg-input-synaptics b
