This was casued by a segmentation fault within the canberra lib. Is
fixed now, can you all please update your system and retry?

Can you please try running the control panel on a native ubuntu install?
(ie, without using a virtual machine).

I am not running Ubuntu on a virtual machine; it is a native install.

I'd just like to add that this bug is still present in the newest
version of Virtualbox (4.0.4) I am not sure whether this bug is
Virtualbox related or not.
