I believe the cause of your error is that grub was installing to an
invaild device. It tried to install to (sd0), which doesn't exist. The
correct drive would be /dev/sda or (hd1), maybe (hd0).

Ha, embarassing. Next time, I'll be sure to let my eyes roll back in my
head only after I've read my logs.
I'm sure more succinct error messages are in the works.
