The upstream bug report feels this particular issue is fixed by linux
commit b5b5ac2dec49ea5ae033434efa90863aa5cdfb2c (which seems to have
resolved a slew of reported bugs).
If you still experience freezes, please file a new bug report using
apport (since that will attach fresh info).

Here's the requested dmesg output. The only difference made by updates
is the mouse pointer now moves, though everything else is frozen.
I've noticed that leaving the machine alone means it won't crash; I've
mostly been using it for Web surfing, this is the activity I've been
doing every time
