I also think that new messages should be easily recognizable, but in
this bug report you even suggest a way to address the issue which could
be a design choice so, I suggest you to refine your description. Putting
in evidence the issue and, maybe in a comment, suggest a solution

Another possible way to do something like this: TweetDeck for Android
remembers the most recent viewed message, and positions the list so that
this message is on top. Scrolling up from there causes new messages to
come into view.
