Another workaround: set no user list in gdm preferences: this ill give a
clean login (tried now after a fresh reinstall on eee900).

I am no longer having this problem, but when I was, I was unable to
switch consoles. Doing so would just lock up my laptop. I don't know if
this information is helpful.
