video of my struggles getting the launcher to show attached.
its particularly hard in a dual monitor setup with the launcher in the middle
as the top left of the button is difficult to hit

It took me forever to figure out that my mouse pointer has to be *right
in the top left corner* to get Unity to show. I kept putting it on the
Ubuntu icon at the left, in which case you get the opaque half showing
Unity. Now if you click on that you get the application search screen
instead.

Not sure if this is of any help; but here goes:
Only when you hover over the top left hand corner of the menu button does the
launcher become fully opaque and usable.
It is quite confusing to see a semi transparent launcher which has no real use,
except maybe to see which applications are
