Exact same problem here : Ubuntu 11.04 unity, Graphics card GeForce 8400
GS, nvidia-driver-173
By accident, I found that by running NVIDIA Xserver setting, right click
on the NVIDIA icon on unity menu bar, and mark it as Always show is
enough to have the same effect as running the same program
Today I installed NVIDIA Driver 270.41.19 and still the same problem. So
I have still start the NVIDIA X Server Settings before I can watch a
video on my pc.

today I tried Ubuntu 10.04 Beta 1. This version has the same problem. A
black screen when playing videos, until you start NVIDIA X Server
Settings. Then your black screen disappears and you can finally watch
your video.

Also
if you are running compiz try typing in a terminal
metacity --replace
to see if it is reproducible in metacity too
Thanks
