compiz fails to
In my case xserver-xorg-video-ati was missing. Reinstalling it solved
the issue, in fact there was an error message in Xorg.0.log that the ati
module couldn't be found and vesa was used. It seems that xserver-xorg-
video-ati was lost during one of the last updates.

This also solved the problem for me. It seems that the recent xserver-
xorg updates forgot one package! (the problem started right after that)
