More on this: These strings come from the .place files which can be
found in /usr/share/unity/places/. Each place has its own gettext
domain, specified in the .place file. For example the domain for
files.place is unity-place-files.
.place files differs a bit on Maverick and Natty:
* On Maverick
Note that this is for the maverick version.

translations of "Search" and "Files & Folders" and "Applications" as displayed:
