I am probably getting the same error. While trying to fresh install
ubuntu 11.04 from USB I get just before end this "partman" error and
installer crashed. So I had to install 10.10 and use "update-manager -d"
to get natty.

The installer is not working for me and I am using a cd and installing
on a macbook pro---it just freezes and says something about an io error.
I have tried 3 time with both 64bit and 32 bit 11.04 on my mac---no
success.
