Please try running the attached script in a terminal. First, install the
vala package from the repositories. Then, run these commands to run this
script:
chmod a+x progress.vala
./progress.vala
After this you should get a progress bar on the terminal icon. After
running this test, please

I really don't do chat and seems to be broken for adding new IRC chats
(filed another bug), so can't test that one, but what about email my
screenshot shows in-box with items but nothing showing on icon.

can you please test if it works fine with empathy for you? also try
'unity --reset' to reset all the unity settings and see if the issue
gets fixed.

Thanks for looking into this, I have tested with Empathy and outlook and
Brasero (thought it migt have progress bar for writting CD) but i never
gat anthing extra on the icons.
I did your Unity Reset as requested which failed with a segmintation
fault here is the output:
