Robin. He, thank you for reporting this bug and helping make Ubuntu
better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue?
Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images

Hi, guys. Thank you all for your kindness help. This bug seems finally solved
on my computer by change the kernel version. I tested 3 different kernel
images, and they are:
1. I added a PPA line 'ppa:kernel-ppa' in my synaptic package repository, and
update the software package list. Then tried
Hi @Bryce, thank you for your information. Is that means I should manually
install some PPA kernel and test it? I'd try it later.
For the past few days, my system locked several times, then, it's more and more
clearly shows that: the froze almost always occurred with my LibraOffice Calc (

@Robin, would be interested to hear if one of the mainline kernels
(2.6.37.x or 2.6.39.x) resolves it for you. http://kernel.ubuntu.com

This is likely to be a kernel issue, and particularly Joshua's comment
suggests it might be fixed in a newer or older kernel.

Since a format and fresh install this bug has not appeared on
my machine, fingers crossed.
Running the following programs also does not bring up any error messages.
LibraOffice Calc, gnome-editor, gnome-terminal, fire fox/chrome, etc.
Agreed: *This is likely to be a kernel issue*.

Hi, @slese, I also formatted my hard driver and fresh installed latest release

very strange thing is:
This problem almost occurred when I am working. I mean: today after I fresh

Hi,
I had this problem too. Manually installing kernel 2.6.37 from the mainline
ubuntu site fixed the problem.
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.37.6-natty/ I used this
version.

I don't know why it happened. I just use my computer as normal, then the
GUI locked. I have to ssh login to my computer, and kill X process, then
the it resumed.

Hi Bryce, thank you for your help.
I had reported more than 5 bug reports of this issue ( I don't actually
remember the numbers, and some of them were marked as it affected me, did not
reported as new thread). Here is another bug that I report:

I remember that when I met this problem, I tried to switch my desktop
environment from Gnome to LXDE with no 3D effect. It's confirmed the
lockup also happened. PPA driver not test yet, but I will try it later.

Hi!

unity and classic desktop. Sometimes the mouse pointer can still moving but
nothing responds. My graphic card is an Intel Corporation
@badhorse, your graphics chip is several generations behind Robin's so
my guess would be that you're having an unrelated gpu lockup. We've had
several reports of i915 lockups, and I have a patched X driver available
in my fig ppa that a number people find seems to fix it that you could
try. But

Hi, can you elaborate a bit on how you're encountering the bug? Your
description is a bit short on details... Have you had other instances
of GPU freezes on natty or just this one time? Is this a fresh install
or have you run previous versions of Ubuntu on this hardware? If so,
did you have
