Reproduced with natty beta-2 amd64 and the Nvidia driver:
1. Dragged a new app (Chromium) into the launcher.
2. An empty space appears in the launcher.
3. Right click on the empty space and it shows Label Empty.
4. Click on the empty space and it actually launches Chromium correctly.

This has happened to me as well, after a crash I lost the panels on the Desktop.
I ran unity --reset-icons to get my desktop back which worked but no luck with
the Launcher Icons
