Well I've managed to use Unity for a couple of days and its held up now.
Some other glitches still about but not the one I reported here. This
has been tested by suspending and resuming the system over the last two
days as well so compiz has had no real restarts either but managed to
keep ticking
Just given it a test run and so far I have not experienced the issue so
far. I open several QT/KDE apps and did not hang the desktop (I did
experience a few unrelated visual bugs though E.g. dock area would not
update when dock slide out). I'm gonna risk doing some actual work and
will report back
Many issues regarding the behavior of Qt apps in Unity have been fixed
now, can you confirm this with the latest version of Unity
(3.8.10-0ubuntu2) ?

I've managed to get Krita to start correctly by going to Applications and
System NitrificationsManage NotificationsTab:Player Settings and setting
No audio output. This allows Krita to start once but if I exit and start the
application again the screen (not the mouse) stalls
