to a fleeting display of a window, supposedly trash, and then the lower
panel 'opening'

after a sequence of actions.
first I used ctrl alt F1 to get a virtual terminal. Looked normal
THEN I reverted the display by using ctrl alt F7 and this appeared (!)
(dark band across screen is an exposure artefact)

Before photo (8) was taken, the first keyboard action I tried was the requested
alt F2
however, there was no response. I then proceeded to use
ctrl alt F1
and
ctrl alt F7
as mentioned in (8)
