Could you check the output of cat /proc/interrupts and see if the interrupts
for hda_intel are raising rapidly when you try to record or watch the
non-working input level meter? If so, this is a duplicate of bug 741825.

Sound Recorder on and recording (+- 50 seconds later)
~$ cat /proc/interrupts
CPU0 CPU1
Just for comparison, same command on functional Maverick, same hw:
Startup:
$ cat /proc/interrupts
CPU0 CPU1
22: 84 1040 IO-APIC-fasteoi ehci_hcd:usb2, hda_intel
After successful recording, 50 secs:
~$ cat /proc/interrupts
CPU0 CPU1
