I ran into the same issue recently and the solution turned out to do an interation of dovecot -n and installing required packages until the above command ran without complaints. In the end I had to install all of the following ii dovecot-common 1:2.0.19-0ubuntu2.2

I had the same problem with newly installed 11.04. The problem for me was related to installing dovecot-common without dovecot-imapd (or other protocol support). Enabling the protocols in dovecot.conf without the support libraries causes the error. This is evident when trying to run dovecot directl
