gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist "['all']"
this command in the terminal and restarting unity should help all the
supported applications show a tray icon in the unity panel

Ok, the work around for me was to just minimise qbittorent, that
minimises it to the launcher, and it seems fine from there.

The qbittorrent icon doesn't show up in the tray and clicking on the
unity icon in the launcher just causes it to flash a couple of times.

Shame, after closing->restoring the window from the tray icon the KDE
Compatibility workaround breaks the context selections on the top bar.
(Files, etc)

If you enable the "KDE Compatibility" under CompizConfig Settings
Manager then the indicator displays and behaves correctly.

As far as I know, libappindicator is only required for Gtk apps, not Qt ones
such as qBittorrent. For qBittorrent, it is supposed to work out of the box. I
believe this is a problem in Unity. Please see:
