Ok, I found a work-around for this. at least for stand-by.
just replace
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=
in /etc/default/grub with this:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=i915.lvds_use_ssc=0
then run sudo update-grub
after rebooting, closing the lit and going to and resume from stand-by
works.
I didn't notice anything.
Don't know what we can do further to get this fixed?! :(

Very annoying bug for me, too...
Changing some values in /etc/default/acpi-support also doesn't work (as
reported several times...)

Got the same problem here :( I also tried to fix the dsdt-table with a
custom kernel which didn't fix anything. Using another kernel as the
2.6.39 results in a black screen directly on boot which can only be
worked by by disabling KMS. Is there any chance of getting this to work
in the next weeks?
I can see a slight change in screen brightness when I force the session
to quit with ctrl+alt+backspace. But that's all. I have the same problem
when I choose the 'turn off screen' option for the closed lid.

Wanted to say I'm running into this when I try to use the Stand-
by/Hibernate function AND when I choose 'turn screen off'.
