This is reported against an old version of Ubuntu and many things has
changed since then. Because of that we won't fix this issue however if
this behavior repeats on a modern version please fill a bug report
against it and we will take it from there.

I am facing this problem in Ubuntu 10.10 with kernel 3.0.6 too - with
exactly the same response from the terminal.
$ sudo /etc/init.d/bluetooth start
--> Bkluetooth Manager starts and bluetooth mouse works
$ sudo update-rc.d bluetooth defaults
System start/stop links for /etc/init.d/bluetooth alr
