Martin Bartlett, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.
This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it
recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, with WLAN enabled
in the BIOS, could you please provide all relevant information
This problem no longer exists in Oneiric Alpha 3. I can boot the live CD
(in Ubuntu 2D) and connect to wireless networks with no problems so far.
Someone more knowledgeable might want to look at what changed in the
code that my trace above references. It would be great to have any fixes
I can confirm that the problem is linked to wireless. I can boot with
wireless disabled, but am unable to do so with it enabled. If I enable
wireless after boot, I get a panic as soon as I attempt to connect to a
network.
Attached is the trace I got through netconsole.
My model is EeePC 1001PX.
Fully up to date on BIOS and natty-updates but it still hangs.
But I have vastly narrowed it down. If I disable WLAN in the bios, the
stock kernel boots fine. Then, when I try to re-enable it (via Fn+F2)
the system freezes.
So the wireless drivers seem to be at fault.

This problem appears to have gone away for me. I don't know if it's
something from natty-updates which has done the trick, but I haven't had
a crash in over a week with the default kernel.

I'm finding that the crashes are now intermittent with kernel 2.6.38-8.
I've seen the end of a kernel backtrace when it goes down, and it looks
like it may be related to the wireless drivers. As I can only see the
last few lines on the eee's screen, I can't tell for certain.
I've set my machine
Interesting addendum - I updated the BIOS to the latest available from
ASUS yesterday - and successfully booted the stock kernel once! Once
only though - I rebooted again and the hang returned.
Not sure that adds anything useful to the report but it was a big
surprise!

This also affects my eee pc 1001P. It will also work when booted using
the 2.6.35-28 kernel.
I am happy to provide any additional information that is useful, or to
help with kernel bisection - just let me know.
