Which install method are you using (desktop/server/alternate CD,
netboot, USB) and which architecture? Did you boot into UEFI mode to
install?
I'm not sure that the process is not adequately documented is grub's
fault - see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFIBooting for a great
deal of info on
It was the normal desktop CD and the alternate cd. The laptop was
partitioned in efi mode and the installer said in both cases grub had
installed successfully, which wasn't true. Installer worked out-of-the-
box when /boot/efi was previously mounted.

oops, forgot to mention it was in 11.04. no idea if it's fixed in
11.10 because I updated the system instead of reinstalling.
